Progressive Theology

What does it mean?

To consider something or someone as progressive means that first one has  to inquire into a thing, to ask questions, to explore meaning and possibility from all realms of life. As such, we know that we will always have more questions than answers. Questions are good! They ground us in humility and keep us growing as individuals and as a church.

At Delavan UCC, the Bible is read at every one of our Progressive Christian worship services and is the foundation of our beliefs, faith, and values. We use various Bible versions. As well, we place emphasis on music from a wide variety of traditions, styles, and composers. Our church is known for its musical talent and gifted choir. Progressive Christianity has been characterized by a “willingness to question tradition, acceptance of human diversity, a strong emphasis on social justice and care for the poor and the oppressed, and environmental stewardship of the earth. Progressive Christians have a deep belief in the centrality of the instruction to “love one another” (John 15:17) within the teachings of Jesus Christ. This leads to a focus on promoting values such as compassion, justice, mercy, and tolerance, often through political activism.
